Kestrel 17 Record Holder

It doesn’t look like a 42-year-old sailplane, and doesn’t behave like it either. This Kestrel 17, piloted by Gordon Boettger, set a new record for glider flights in the Northern Hemisphere, going more than 1400 miles on a round-trip flight from Minden, Nevada, at up to 28,000 feet during the 13-hour adventure.

KITPLANES Web editor Omar Filipovic, based in Portland, Oregon, is a GlaStar builder—old school, that is, he’s taking his time and doing everything himself.
