Garmin begins seamless integration between and Garmin Pilot

Garmin announced the initial phase of integration between the Garmin Pilot™ app and the popular web portal. As a result of Garmin's acquisition of in August, both companies have made rapid progress in merging portfolios. Beginning next week, pilots will be able to use for pre-flight planning and filing, and automatically view the same flight plan within the Garmin Pilot app on Apple mobile devices. This announcement represents the first of a series of cohesive enhancements between the website and the Garmin product line. Looking West at Donner Pass - those rocks are not easy to climb, even in summer.

Take a look at these beautiful pictures, taken over the town of Truckee (CA), just north of Lake Tahoe,  at the northern edge of the Sierra Nevada. It's mid-November, and snow is beginning to fill in the high country. The large granite crags at the western edge of Donner Lake (the approach to Donner Pass) are visible - but already showing their winter coat.  To the east, we can look into the Great Basin of North America. At the foot of the hills in which we find ourselves, the city of Reno - planted in a valley known as the Truckee Meadows. These pictures were taken out of opposite sides of my RV-8, and the flying time from Truckee Meadows to the Donner Pass is about ten minutes. Continue reading "Perspective"

Garmin Flight Planning App for iPad and Other Mobile Devices

Garmin has announced Garmin Pilot, a new aviation app for iOS devices, including the iPad and iPhone, and Android-based mobile devices. The app offers pilots complete navigation, trip planning, DUAT(S) filing, weather and electronic flight bag capabilities.

“From integrated flight decks to mobile apps, Garmin is committed to providing our customers with a broad suite of best-in-class products,” said Carl Wolf, Garmin’s vice president of aviation sales and marketing. “Garmin Pilot is the perfect complement to our extensive line of avionics products and services. iFlightPlanner for iPad to be Released This Fall

Sennheiser, manufacturer of aviation headsets, is partnering with in developing a flight planning application designed for use on the iPad and iPad2. The company says the new application will allow pilots to download flight plans from any web browser into their iPads. Once downloaded, pilots can view flight details such as navigation logs, VFR and IFR charts, as well as approach plates while in flight and without a data connection. After landing, the app will allow pilots to electronically close their flight plans and log flight details into their iFlightPlanner logbooks.
