Stuck in Yankton Again (Yea!)

Like farmers talking about the weather, pilots and crew have been enjoying great hospitality at Yankton, South Dakota's Chan Gurney Municipal Airport while waiting out the thunderstorms pin wheeling around OSH and AirVenture. An epic OSH arrival event when clear weather arrives is in the making.

If you ever needed a weather magnet just throw a fly-in... as anyone headed to AirVenture today can tell you. With the rest of the country clear for flying, AirVenture has a nice big, lazy low pressure rain vacuum slowly circling the field. Meanwhile, eager would-be AirVenture attendees are piling up north, south, east and for us, west of Oshkosh. Continue reading "Stuck in Yankton Again (Yea!)"

The Days Before

While AirVenture doesn't officially start until Monday, the three or four days before are really my favorite. It's the time of gathering, the time of preparation. Volunteers have been on site for weeks - some for more than that. I arrived Thursday evening to find the grounds prepared, signs up, rows of aircraft parking prepared... and none of that happens by itself! I enjoy showing up a couple of days early because I get to spend time with my friends who do all of that work. We get to sit and talk before the tsunami of airplanes and people that make this the greatest of aviation events arrived with the cacophony of thousands of flying machines. Largest Yet: Mojave Experimental Fly-In 2018

There was a little of everything on the ramp during the Mojave Experimental Fly In. Andrew Angelotti's Spingarage KR-2 sits low and white in the center of this view.

With 344 transient aircraft and 16 local operations logged by the tower, plus what might have been 100 airplanes on the ramp at any one time, the 2018 Mojave Experimental Fly-In April 21, 2018 certainly looked and felt like the most-attended MEFI in the event's six-year history. It's true that many of the aircraft arriving at Mojave were certified transportation, but they were carrying experimenters and there were still plenty of experimentals to eyeball on Mojave's ample ramp. Homebuilder's (Brief) Guide to Sun 'n Fun

There is a lot to see and do at Sun 'n Fun, and even a lot NOT to do - just sitting and watching airplanes is enjoyable if you've never taken the time to do it. Visiting the many experimental aircraft vendors outside and in Buildings A through D is mandatory, of course. But there are a few things we recommend that homebuilders need to put on their list of things to do before they leave the show. Continue reading "Homebuilder's (Brief) Guide to Sun 'n Fun"
