Van's Aircraft, Inc. has announced a new program to build completed, fly-away, RV-12s. Nearly 200 kitbuilt RV-12s have been completed and flown as ELSA and Experimental/Amateur-Built aircraft, accumulating thousands of hours in the hands of typical pilots. Production SLSA RV-12s will include the benefits of this real-world flight experience, the company says, rather than just factory testing done by professional pilots.
The introductory price of the completed airplane is targeted at $105,000. Standard equipment will include the Rotax 912ULS engine, Dynon SkyView EFIS (which includes a Mode-S transponder and GPS), Garmin SL40 com radio, Flightcom stereo intercom, 406Mhz ELT, Flightline interior and LED lighting for night flight. Options will include wheelpants, ADS-B, a two-axis autopilot, premium paint finishes and Oregon Aero seats and interior.
Van’s has a working agreement with Synergy Air of Eugene, Oregon, to manufacture the airplanes. Orders will be accepted starting in November 2012; initial deliveries are expected in early 2013.

Whilst visiting Oshkosh in 2009 we marveled at Van’s red RV-12. Back in Johannesburg in March 2010 I joined 9 aviation enthusiasts in building project initiated by serial RV builder Rudi Greyling. As an engineer I was working side by side with auditors and other diverse professionals, jelling into a team, well taken up with what we were achieving. This labour of love was a tremendous learning exercise. She was completed early 2011 by working one full day over weekends every fortnight. Once completed we were left with a feeling of loss – missing the camaraderie only attained by such intense involvement and seeing a fine specimen evolving. She flies like a dream and some of us have already acquired our Sport pilot’s licenses and are building hours. Van’s support was excellent and time will have to be found to take up another challenge.

Van's RV-12 kit number 18 was ordered the first day orders were accepted by Van's and completed 2 years and 2 months later. It was a joint project between my Dad and I (my Dad doing all the really hard parts, like fiberglass). First flight was June 19, 2010. Paint was by Jeff Miller at JMI Motoring located on the airport at Arlington. The airplane flies great and has already won 2 awards at local fly-ins.

Van's Light Sport RV-12 was on prominent display at Sun 'n Fun today, with, at times, a three-deep line to see the details of this Rotax 912-powered LSA. Here is a quick, no-frills, no voice-over walk around--hey, we like to keep it simple around here. Van's has been taking orders for the kit version.
