Sporty’s Offers Instrument Rating App

SportysInstrumentCourseSporty's Complete Instrument Rating Course is now available as a dedicated iPad/iPhone app. This FAA WINGS-accepted app includes 13 hours of real-world video and advanced graphics, including 3D animations to help explain difficult concepts. Included with the app is a dedicated written test preparation program. The app also includes a flight-training syllabus, interactive maneuvers guide and integrated Practical Test Standards.

The written-test prep program features several modes of operation. Learning mode helps with specific areas of study. Test mode provides a random mix of questions to provide a simulated exam. With Flashcard mode, users can answer questions without seeing any answer choices in a self-graded environment. The app allows users to save video segments for viewing when an Internet connection is not available.

Just like the traditional DVD and online versions, the app also allows users to earn the written-test endorsement and receive FAA WINGS credit directly from the app. The complete course costs $199.99 and can be downloaded at

Simplified Plotter for Flight Planning

Sportys introduces the new EZPlotter, intended to simplify preflight planning. To use the EZPlotter, place it on top of the departure airport on a sectional chart and move the arm to the destination. The plotter will display the distance and course to your destination. No calculations are required.

Measuring 11 inches by 4.75 inches, the EZPlotter is virtually indestructible, according to the company, so you can toss it in your flight bag. The EZPlotter is available for $11.95.

New Online Aircraft Management System

The scheduling page for Sporty's Plane Manager.

Sun n Fun 2011 was a big stop on Sporty's Pilot Shop's 50th Anniversary tour. To celebrate, the company announced a new, no-cost service for aircraft owners called Sporty's Plane Manager.

The cloud-based program makes it simple for partnership-owned aircraft to be managed online. The program includes a scheduler, maintenance calendar and an area to record squawks so that each operator can see the current status of the aircraft at all times. Because the program is cloud-based, it does not reside on any local computer, so it is not the domain of one particular partner but is truly a shared responsibility. Best of all, it is optimized for iPhone/iPad use.

"We want to put the fun back into flying, because we know flying is fun," said Hal Shevers, founder of Sporty's Pilot Shop. "The Plane Manager just makes aircraft ownership simpler, and we hope, a little less expensive."
